Graduated in Medicine, 1981 (CurriFriedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen, Germany) PhD in 1982 (thesis: Konzepte einer Pathologie der Hyperosmolarität, supervisor Prof Dr Götz Brandt, Institute of Pathology, Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen, Germany). 1982-1984: Gerhard-Domagk-Institue of Pathology, University of Münster, Germany. 1984-1986: Institute of Neuropathology, Bethel, Bielefeld, Germany. 1986 - 1988: Institute of Pathology , Klinikum Mannheim, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität, Heidelberg. Since 1988: Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil; Full professor (professor pleno) of the Postgraduate Course in Medical Pathophysiology (UNICAMP) Lectures on general and special pathology, scientific methods and biostatistics. Research Interests: applying computerized image analysis and new technologies in microcopy. This includes: In particular: 1) Detection of invisible "hidden" information? in routinely prepared cytologic or histologic slides by texture analysis with inhouse developed computer programs based on the concepts of entropy, fractality, co-occurrence matrix etc.; 2) Generation of virtual microscopic images with the contrast created by differences of physicochemical characteristics of tissues, e.g. fluorescence lifetime imaging and multiphoton microscopy (in collaboration with INCT INFABIC) 3) Creation of diagnostic algorithms and prognostic mathematical models based on computerized image analysis or other clinical and laboratory data. 175 publications indexed in PUBMED, 190 in SCOPUS, 254 in WEBOFKNOWLEDGE (183 without meeting summaries or abstracts). 2886 citations with Hirsch index h = 27, according to WEBOFKNOWLEDGE; 4432 with h=36, according to Google Scholar (on 01/07/2022). Member of the editorial/advisory boards of Cellular Pathology Pathology Research and Practice; Section Editor of Diagnostic Pathology and Academic Editor of PLOS ONE.
